Keeping up with aged old traditions of Anuradhapura, Chairman of 'Aura Lanka', Dr. Chandika Viranjith Thambugala initiated work on the annual whitewashing of the Ruwanweli Maha Seya.

The massive stupa, which is 338 feet in height and 942 feet in circumference, is one of the revered and spiritual places of Anuradhapura - the ancient city of kings.

The stupa is whitewashed annually before the arrival of the Vesak and Poson season which falls in the months of May and June respectively. It is considered a most venerated task and is carried out with great dignity, piety and enthusiasm.

Dr. Thambugala had donated Rs. 12 million for the initiative last year on Feb. 12, 2020.

As per traditions, Dr. Thambugala, his wife, relations and business associates participated in religious observances before the Sri Maha Bodhi in February.

Dr. Thambugala had then initiated the whitewashing activities after receiving the blessings of Ruwanseli Maha Seya Chief Incumbent - Ven. Pallegama Hemarathana Nayaka Thera.
